Water, Scarcity of

Worldwide, freshwater demands from the agricultural, industrial, and municipal sectors have been continually rising during the past century and are projected to keep increasing in the coming decades. Freshwater availability, however, is limited, constrained by precipitation patterns. Growing freshwater scarcity constitutes a major risk for the global economy, aggravated by the expected effects of climate change. Improving water allocation and use efficiencies will probably be insufficient to stabilize water consumption and will need to be complemented with policies aimed at the stabilization of the growing demands for water‐intensive commodities
