Epidemiology is the study of illness in populations, and social epidemiology is the branch of this field that focuses on the study of relations between social factors and disease in populations. This study includes surveillance, prediction, and etiologic investigations on distribution of disease according to all manner of social identity, position, status, and class. The most common dimensions employed are race/ethnicity, gender, and various measures of socioeconomic class or position. While these variables are common in all epidemiological research, social epidemiology is distinguished by a focus on these quantities as exposures or by explicit reference to social science theory in the interpretation
