Methods, Arts‐Based

Arts‐based methods apply techniques and processes for inquiry in the fine arts to sociological research. These techniques may draw on the visual arts, film, music, dance, theater, or literature for data collection, data analysis, and reporting. The arts allow for forms of representation that draw on tacit dimensions of knowing and that extend human understanding beyond the limitations of language. Arts‐based methods challenge prevalent assumptions like the art/science or the mind/body dichotomies. Furthermore, arts‐based methods may be highly effective in communicating research results to broad audiences and thus can be instrumental in shaping political coalitions that can influence meaningful social policy change
