Locating Intersectionality in Transnational Aid Activism
An Autoethnography of a Disaster Response

This paper argues that transnational aid activism is an intersectional practice which cuts across personal, community, and national endeavours towards an emergency disaster response. The disaster response provided after super typhoon Yolanda devastated Tacloban City in 2013 is examined as a case study of transnational practices, focusing in particular on how power structures are manifested in the transfer of funds and distribution of relief goods and services. This paper offers a reflective interpolation of intersectionality applied in transnational aid using autoethnography, deriving in particular from volunteerism with ReadWorld Foundation. The personal and transnational nexus necessarily bring in a new perspective of the "personal is global" situatedness among diasporic individuals like myself. Intersectionality as praxis offers possibilities in examining humanitarianism and transnational aid activism today
