This essay explores the evolution of a specific A merican family farm in rural I owa, from 1853 through present. It describes macrolevel economic, structural, and political events during this period and their microlevel effects on the K ardel family farm. Historical sources and interviews with family farm members are used to trace how this working, multigenerational family farm navigated and adapted to national and international events affecting M idwestern U . S . family farming. In so doing, it sheds light on wider trends in agricultural evolution and on factors influencing the prospects for continued survival of U . S . family farming
