Pareto and Jung

At first glance, Vilfredo Pareto and Carl Gustav Jung sit at opposite sides of the modern socio-scientific table. The former was a self-styled "positivist" and an abrasively outspoken man of science who, in the name of "empirical observation," never missed a chance to vent scorn at all things mystical, mythical, and metaphysical. The latter was a keen student of the unconscious recesses of our psyche, as well as an avid explorer of all cultures' sacred traditions and philosophies. Nevertheless, in terms of eventual results, Pareto and Jung ended up identifying psycho-social patterns that are curiously and strikingly analogous. Basically, Pareto's residues and Jung's archetypes are surprisingly and revealingly similar to each other. Moreover, showing how their eventual conclusions converged suggests eo ipso that the fundamental instincts, drives, or urges that they recognized may be our genuine psychological reality, thus pointing to a plausible solution to the enduring conundrums surrounding human motivation
