The symposium brings together an impressive depth of experience, and a refreshing diversity of perspective. Five political scientists and an anthropologist conduct a valuable inquest into the state of social science in confronting the rural world in Africa, and the constraints of its development. Two of the six, Fred Burke and David Brokensha, began their labors on micro-political processes well before independence. Three others, Alvin Magid, Nelson Kasfir, and Rodger Yeager, have all carried out major post-independence studies. Walter Bowring, who comments on the administrative aspects of the other five papers, has combined eighteen years of administrative service and university teaching in East Africa. All offer illuminating reflections stimulated both by a scrutiny of the extant research, and their own experience in relating local processes to broader social theories
