Recent Demographic Change in Western Europe

This paper considers recent and prospective trends in population change in Western Europe against the background of the historical demographic transition. With respect to population growth and fertility the present simultaneity and uniformity of trends and reversals across western Europe contrasts sharply with the historical diversity in the timing and pace of demographic transition. The process of urbanization closely tied with industrialization has leveled off and even reversed; here too the direction of change is uniform across Europe. The potential for mortality decline at young ages has been exhausted and Europe can expect than any further improvements in mortality will serve only to accelerate the aging of its populations.
