European integration has been a factor in encouraging the growth of regionalism in Europe. Regions have become an increasingly important part of the architecture of the European Union since the 1980s. The high point of their advance was the Maastricht Treaty on European union. At the Convention on the Future of Europe, the regional theme was not a priority. Regions themselves were divided on their aims and strategy. National debates on regional devolution have not linked into the European debate, despite invoking the theme of Europe. Some modest changes in the role of regions emerged from the Convention, but the issue will remain for the future
