Speech and Morality: On the Metaethical Implications of Speaking develops a new line of argument for moral realism. The book's argument comes in three stages. The first stage of the argument consists in presenting and defending the normative theory of speech, according to which, speech acts are generated by an agent's altering her normative position with regard to her audience, gaining rights, responsibilities, and obligations of certain kinds. This account of speech raises the issue of what the character of these rights, responsibilities, and obligations might be. The second stage of the argument defends the thesis that some of these rights, responsibilities, and obligations are moral. Along the way, the book defends the claim that the primary arguments for thinking that there could be no moral facts fail. The third stage of the argument develops the additional claim that these moral rights, responsibilities, and obligations should be understood as moral realists believe. The implications of this conclusion include the following: We should reject error-theoretic accounts of morality, according to which there are no moral facts. We should also reject expressivist accounts of the moral domain, since these views cannot accommodate the explanatory dimensions of moral properties. And, third, we should reject constructivist accounts of morality, according to which we construct moral features rather than discover them. The book concludes by considering how the overarching argument can help solve knotty issues in the epistemology of moral belief
