The articles in this section of JAAR are the result of the 2000 annual meeting of the New England/Maritimes Region of the American Academy of Religion, whose theme was “Religion and Empire.” The introduction and four articles explore the relationship between religious traditions and empire as initial constructions, analytical descriptions, and, in some cases, implications for praxis. The articles address methodological issues such as typologies, category crossing, and the fluidity of types, as well as the decentering of older foci. They also explore themes such as state and religious power, conflict, and pluralism; responses to pluralism and multiple sites of authority; and religious and political agency.
