Compte-rendu d'une table ronde tenue a la reunion annuelle de l'American Psychoanalytic Association en mai 1983. Le debat avait pour point de depart la definition du complexe d'Œdipe par Freud dans une note de 1920 integree aux «Trois Essais sur la theorie de la sexualite»: «Il a ete dit que le complexe d'Œdipe etait le complexe nucleaire des nevroses et constituait la part essentielle de leur contenu. Il represente l'acne de la sexualite infantile, et par ses effets d'apres-coup, il exerce une influence decisive sur la sexualite de l'adulte... Tout [sujet] qui echoue a le surmonter tombera, victime de la nevrose»
