Cultural Rotation, Its Propulsion and Rhythm. A Contribution Towards an Analysis of the Mechanism of Cultures

INTRODUCTION. In a previous article' has been explained by reference to the accumulative process, the storing of devices and knowledge, with its complementary elimination of those which became obsolete and with specialization of others the use of which had been partly eclipsed. This process was regarded as the result of collaboration of many races, peoples and political units, and it concerned the objects and material accomplishments. But the subjects by whom progress is effected have not been considered. Primitive, exotic and ancient cultures with a civilizational equipment different from our modern Euro-American one permit more aloofness when subjected to analysis and offer a wider range of comparison. They are, therefore, particularly helpful for an investigation which is concerned with the effects of the role of human actions and reactions. Reciprocity of Relationships. The members of a community conform to an order and a pattern of conduct, based essentially on reciprocal relations. In considering devices and knowledge alone it has not been taken into account, as stated above, that housing, daily provisions, implements, machinery, weapons and so on do not exist apart from men, but have been created, changed and selected by human beings living in concrete communities in a locality of certain climate and environmental outfit consisting of woods, grass, rivers, or ice, with boundaries of sea or mountains, where particular animals, plants and minerals can be found.
