syntactic properties of EQ's, in particular characteristics of such stimulus-response pairs, have generally been treated only superficially (if at all) in literature. Langacker, for example, explicitly excludes EQ's from his discussion of status of presentence marker Q (1974, 1213). Culicover, on other hand, treats EQ's as unassimilable to standard rules of formation in English. He states, The relative unrestrictedness of makes it unprofitable to attempt to integrate into analysis of more usual types of (1976, 73). Similarly, Cooper wants to remove EQ's from domain of syntactic phenomena altogether. He states that the grammatical rules of language should not generate [EQ's]. situation with these is, I think, quite similar to something that arises with stress in phonology(1983, 149). Other studies primarily interested in intonation contour of EQ's. Pope, for example, discusses derivations for intonational patterns characteristic of (1975, 71). Her goal is to characterize semantic and functional uses of such basic patterns as 'rising' and 'falling,' and discuss rules which assign them (1975, 71). Although she does try to differentiate EQ's from what she claims other similar structures,2 Pope's discussion becomes confused. For example, at one point she states that EQ's are not even especially associated with WH (1975, 75); in a footnote, however, she essentially contradicts herself by stating that echo ... are, again, a special type of WH question (1975, 97). most useful treatment of EQ's that we know of is Sobin (1978). He argues that questions with EQ intonation derived in more than one way and that EQ's [in contrast to Culicover's position] not less structured forms, but structures which adhere just as strictly to rules of English syntax as other structural types do(1978, 255).
