the argot of so-called criminal narcotic addicts is the least stable of any of ffie criminal argots I have examined. The addicts are constantly 'steaming the lingo up'; this tendency (perhaps concomitant to addiction) complicates collection and makes the formation of definitions based on usage most difficult. It produces an infinite number of words and idioms which enjoy only a brief life among certain individuals or cliques, or which are used only a few times by one addict, then dropped.3
