More than a year ago, I read a copy of John Clark's Revisited, presented as a critique of St Joseph in Britain, my own two-part article printed in Folklore in 1993 and 1994. Discussion of the Glastonbury legendary construct has been haunted by an ungenerous and judgemental spirit, inherited from the dominant nineteenth-century criticism. Either Mr Clark has failed to understand the reorientation I have proposed, or he is unwilling to allow a discussion which departs from those traditional critical contexts. Either way, it appears necessary to restate my contentions and conclusions, as well as discussing more directly the developing methodology which underlies my analysis and makes it different from previous analyses. Since Clark has addressed the archaeological issues at length, it is probably appropriate to explain in greater detail just how I think that the archaeology relates to the legends. His specific criticisms also will be answered, insofar as they actually relate to what I wrote. In the first half of my article, the central contentions, discussion and conclusions were as follows
