seems to have been a different age. The problems, resources, funding and even the personnel have to a considerable extent changed since this volume was conceived in 1963. Its theme, now rather out of vogue, reflects the interest (illustrated in Marian Smith's work, The Artist in Tribal Societies, 1961) in raising the status of the non-Western artist by scrutinizing his every activity. With one or two exceptions, however, none of the participants had really specialized in this problem while in the field. Hence, there seem to be relatively few illustrations for so lengthy a work. There is, on the other hand, considerable similarity of approach in the various papers, reflecting apparently the influence of Melville Herskovits either directly or through agencies such as the Social Science Research Council where his viewpoint often prevailed.
