This study explores the relationship between the capacity for autonomous behavior among freshman college students and the patterns of interaction between the students and their parents during the transition from high school to college. Autonomous-relatedness, the capacity for integration of both independent behavior and the maintenance of positive family ties, appears related to particular transactional family patterns, which were observed
