The Problem of Transportation to Medical Facilities on an Indian Reservation

Inadequate means of transporting patients to central medical facilities remains a large impediment to the delivery of medical care on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The extent of the problem was studied at the Tuba City PHS Hospital by direct interviews with out patients. No organized system of public transportation was found. Only 30 per cent of the families questioned owned vehicles. Most others came to the hospital by walking, hitchhiking, or paying large fees to neighbors. Also isolation, great distances, poor roads, and long transit times were encountered. The resultant immobility of the Navajo is discussed as a deterrent to adequate health care
