Methodological Development of a System of Medical Audit

A model of an objective, systematic audit of medical care is presented. The prototype presents the analysts of the quality of care observed in a sample of 400 cases of biliary tract surgery. The model involves a criterion listing of information items expected in the hospital chart of a patient receiving the “best” type of clinical care, subjective scaled quality ratings of the traditional categories of patient chart information, statistical analysis of the relationship between missing criterion-required information and the subjective ratings of quality so that only important related information items are retained, and development of a set of case “scores” presenting quality of care judgments on a unidimensional scale ranging between good and bad
