A Resource-Use Model for Long-Term Psychiatric Facilities

Long-term, active institutional care is a critical part of the treatment required by many of the seriously and persistently mentally ill.1 One type of facility currently providing such care is the Institution for Mental Disease, defined by federal statute as a hospital, nursing facility or other institution of more than 16 beds that is primarily engaged in providing diagnosis, treatment, attention, nursing care, and related services (42. U.S.C. Sec. 1396(d)). Institutions for Mental Diseases have received little attention in the policy or research arena even though they may provide a reasonable alternative to acute and long-term psychiatric hospitalization. In this study, a model of resource use informed by nursing home and mental health services research and incorporating client and facility features is described
