The site occurs on the north slope of the Pine Ridge in Sioux County, northwestern Nebraska (Fig. 14.1). The location is ap proximately 23 mi. northwest of Crawford, Nebraska, in a southern tributary of the Cheyenne River known as the Hat Creek drainage. The deposit is contained within a unit of alluvial-colluvial fill in a small valley that drains a large perennial spring. The drainage is bounded east and west by Oligocene bed rock. Immediately to the west of the bone bed is a ridge that extends northward from the Pine Ridge escarpment
