The Atlantic charter, The United Nations and colonial independence

The people of the colonies and colonials in the UK quickly realized that the opportunities provided by the Second World War should be used to advance their interests: independence for the colonies and equality at home and in the Mother Country. They used the terms of the Atlantic Charter, which promised to restore sovereignty and self‐government to those who had been ‘forcibly deprived of them’, to pressure the British government. In 1945 they used the founding meeting of the United Nations to put their case for independence before the world forum. Realizing that the United States was an interested player in the discussions on the future of the colonies, they attempted to enlist its aid for their enterprise, as well as that of African American organizations. This article focuses on the quest for independence undertaken by Black organizations in Britain
