Outline of an Anthropology of the Modern Philippine State

This article has two objectives: (1) to identify problems and pitfalls of the “weak Philippine state” discourse, and (2) to explore an alternative perspective for analyzing contemporary Philippine political development. It is therefore divided into two parts. The first part provides a critical examination of the “weak Philippine state” discourse in which the central state is argued to be tarnished by the selfish local strongmen and their conceived predatory networks. At first, it identifies its origins by tracing its intellectual tradition. Then, it identifies its weaknesses in explaining Philippine political development. The second part of the article outlines a research strategy, namely, an anthropology of the modern Philippine state through three perspectives: political decentralization, internal pacification, and the Strongmen as state builders
