While British historians of medieval Spain have tended to work primarily on the kingdom of Castile, their American counterparts favor Catalonia and the kingdom of Aragón more generally. There is no obvious explanation for this division of labor, other than the accidents of personal choice and the influence of one scholar on another, especially through thesis supervision. However, it has resulted, over at least two generations, in a uniformly impressive body of publications, both books and articles, written by a very distinguished group of historians working in the United States on the eastern regions of the Iberian Peninsula in the medieval centuries. Among their numbers can be included Robert I. Burns S.J., Thomas N. Bisson, Jennifer Davis, Paul Freedman, Simon R. Doubleday, Adam Kosto, and Brian A. Catlos. To this Olympian assembly can now be added the name of Cullen J. Chandler, already noted for a series of articles on the topic, but now the author of the best book in English on the period of Carolingian rule in Catalonia—Carolingian Catalonia: Politics, Culture, and Identity in an Imperial Province, 778–987.
