The Theory of Share-Cropping with Labour Market Dualism

In a recent work on share-cropping, Steven N. Cheung (1969) put forward the proposition that the input of non-land resources, the output and the rental income per unit of land would tend towards the same levels under alternative systems of using land-land leased out on fixed rent, owned land cultivated with the help of wage labour, and share-cropping. This is because both landlords and peasants are constrained by alternatives open to them. The landlord has the alternative of earning the rent he would get in a fixed-rent system or the profit he will earn by cultivating his land with wage labour. On the other hand, the share-cropper's alternative earnings are what he would get by working under the fixed-rent system or as wage labour. The system of share-cropping, working within the limits of the alternatives open to either contracting party, would, according to Cheung, tend to produce the same results
