Management of Interdisciplinary Research in Universities

In the early eras of research in universities, much of the research was performed by individuals operating essentially independently. For universities, the research efforts tended to be relatively small projects with few, if any, outside funds to support such efforts. After World War II, and particularly in the 1960's with the emphasis on the social reform and space programs, research became a very large portion of many universities' activities. As universities increased their role in research, team efforts became important. Large projects that required team efforts were developed often at the request of the external research sponsor. Within the past 10 to 15 years, emphasis has been directed toward interdisciplinary research (IDR) and its contribution to the solution of increasingly complex societal problems. With IDR, individuals of differing expertise and backgrounds work together in conducting a research project.
