Some of these conflicts are genuine: they illustrate the possibility-indeed, demonstrate the actuality-that reasonable men may be on either side. But reasonable men in opposed alignment are not presumed to see with equal weight the claims of themselves and their opponents. That is a curse laid on reason, as on life. Others may see and acknowledge this ambivalence of reason; but participants, if they see it, are not to acknowledge it. The more sincere they are, the less likely they are to see reasonableness on the other side. That is the provincial aspect of sincerity itself.
