Empire Families: Britons and Late Imperial India. By ELIZABETH BUETTNER (Oxford: Oxford U.P., 2004; pp. xiv + 310. £30). POSTCOLONIAL scholarship treats empire as an integrated system in which the experience of imperial power and the imagination of racial difference profoundly conditioned the culture of the metropole as well as the subaltern societies overseas. Hybridity and syncretism reflected an imperial world in which boundaries were porous, and sea-lanes were conduits rather than obstacles. Probably few imperial historians would dissent from these propositions, but until now they have been demonstrated primarily in the field of discourse and representation which postcolonial scholarship has made its own, rather than in the social history of empire. In view of the centrality of emigration and overseas career-choice to the maintenance of empire, it is remarkable that we have so little systematic knowledge about these topics beyond the bare democratic facts. Work of this kind is badly needed, on both the mentality of those who left for the colonies, and on the impact of those who later returned home on the imperial consciousness of the mother-country. In these areas biographical anecdote has too often taken the place of the rigorous survey
