It is not my intention to write the epitaph of the Spanish subjunctive. It would be foolhardy indeed! Nor even to arouse premature, if not entirely unfounded, hope among our students, however popular that might make us. But rather to urge writers of grammar texts to bring their rules up to date, in keeping with the everyday practices, and to follow Bello y Cuervo's advice that las practicas de la lengua deberian darse de un modo mis completo y exacto
