"Perceptions of and Perspectives on the Term "Communicative

An analysis of the term communicative as used by scholars and as realized in textbooks suggests a gap between theory and practice as well as substantial differences between the perspectives held by scholars and the perceptions held by instructors, publishers, and others. These differences are reviewed and their sources traced to attempts to adapt the term itself to existing methodologies as well as to the education of language instructors
