Edward Mortimer looks at the history of Western secularism in the light of the recent resurgence of religious themes in international relations. He argues that in the revolutions in Eastern Europe Christianity has had its own resurgence, with Christian culture once again being seen as a unifying European theme. But the process of unification and self-definition should be undertaken with care so as not to assume that Islam is alien to Western/Judaeo-Christian values, or that it represents a potential threat to the West in international relations
