The idea that International Relations (IR) needs to recognize the active, affective, ethical and political role of non-human nature in world politics has become increasingly debated. This book offers a timely and important intervention in this discussion, pushing it to reach a balance between the need for theoretical innovation and rigorous empirical research. It provides readers with a well-rounded view of the analytical, normative and pragmatic openings emerging from post-anthropocentric approaches to world politics, but also gives a detailed account of some of the most pressing issues shaping the ecological and planetary crisis that we currently face. The first part of the book focuses on the theoretical piece of the post-anthropocentric puzzle and unpacks the conceptual and political possibilities offered by different approaches to non-human nature in world politics. Post-human thinking permits us not only to problematize how certain beings and things have been constituted as objects to be governed at the international level, but also to reconsider global governance and democracy in ways that allow the concerns of non-human nature to be included into decision-making across different political–planetary levels. Actor–network theory leads to a reconsideration of politics in terms of multi-scalar patches, more-than-human assemblages and indeterminate entanglements, while quantum social thinking sidesteps reductive understandings of the Anthropocene and allows us to speculate about the complex and minute ways in which human and non-human nature interact to compose a multiplicity of realities
