American imperialism and the state, 1893–1921

This is an important book in many ways. First for the topic itself, as Colin D. Moore's thesis provides an original contribution to our understanding of US imperialism set within the period that is usually conventionally treated. Second, the book also contributes to our understanding of imperialism generally and therefore to the historiography of its US variant. Third, American imperialism and the state, 1893–1921 continues to chip away at the notion of US exceptionalism in this regard. Fourth, because one of the book's major contentions is that the politics and processes of evading US democratic practices—especially the imperfect checks and balances—ultimately contributed to the dominance of the executive branch and the rise of the ‘imperial presidency’ after the Second World War. Moore argues that US adventures with imperialism in the early twentieth century both informed individuals and produced a culture of foreign policy-making that sought to liberate itself from the democratic controls. These are big issues and Moore tackles them systematically and based on a deep understanding of the literature and the archives. It is a book set within a particular period, but which has significant contemporary implications
