AU-rich elements (AREs) are RNA elements that enhance the rapid decay of mRNA. The fate of ARE-mRNA is controlled by ARE-binding proteins. HuR, a member of the embryonic lethal abnormal vision (ELAV) family of RNA-binding proteins, is involved in the export and stabilization of ARE-mRNA. In the vast majority of cancer cells, HuR constitutively relocates to the cytoplasm, resulting in the stabilization of ARE-mRNA. Previously, we described that th…

Considerable research has shown that cyanobacteria and the viruses that infect them (cyanophage) are pervasive and diverse in global lake populations. Few studies have seasonally analyzed freshwater systems, and little is known about the bacterial and viral communities that coexist during the harsh winters of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Here, we employed quantitative PCR to estimate the abundance of cyanomyoviruses in this system, using the porta…

Open Access•Alfredo Lopez Austin, Toshihiko Shimizu et al.•ARTICLE•2008

We examined the distribution and origin of the nerve fibers innervating the dura mater of the rat that show immunoreactivity for the TRPV1 receptor (TRPV1-IR). Nearly 70% of the nerve fibers showing TRPV1-IR in the dura mater also exhibited CGRP-IR. Using a combination of immunohistochemistry and a retrograde tracer technique, we detected tracer accumulation in 0.6% of the neurons in the trigeminal ganglion and a few neurons in the dorsal root ga…

The family approach for related compounds can be used to evaluate hazard and estimate reference concentrations/doses using internal dose metrics for a group (family) of metabolically related compounds. This approach is based upon a simple four-step framework for organizing and evaluating toxicity data: 1) exposure, 2) tissue dosimetry, 3) mode of action, and 4) response. Expansion of the traditional exposure-response analysis has been increasingl…

Trichotillomania is an intriguing psychosomatic entity in which there is an irresistible desire to pull out the hair from the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows and other parts of the body. The process results in an instant release of tension, a sense of relief and security. However, non-scaring alopecia is its clinical presentation. The development of trichobezoar following ingestion of the pulled hair is its salient complication in a few cases. Subsequ…

PEP-19 is a small, intrinsically disordered protein that binds to the C-domain of calmodulin (CaM) via an IQ motif and tunes its Ca(2+) binding properties via an acidic sequence. We show here that the acidic sequence of PEP-19 has intrinsic Ca(2+) binding activity, which may modulate Ca(2+) binding to CaM by stabilizing an initial Ca(2+)-CaM complex or by electrostatically steering Ca(2+) to and from CaM. Because PEP-19 is expressed in cells that…

Open Access•Prashant Kumar, Alfredo Lopez Austin et al.•ARTICLE•2004

We propose a calibration-free algorithm for retrieval of elemental concentrations using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. This is a simple and improved version of other ratio-based algorithms as it needs only one trial parameter to estimate all other concentrations. The present algorithm has been used to estimate the composition of a brass sample, and the results agree within 1% with electron probe microanalyzer measurements
