Competing Discourses on the Political Economy of Hunger
Among poor nations whose people suffer from hunger and malnutrition, talk about hunger and malnutrition appears to dictate the action (or lack of action) that will be taken to alleviate the suffering. In Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, where hunger and malnutrition are common, subtle differences concerning the interpretation of the causes of hunger exist among mothers of hungry children and professionals who provide services to them. Such differences …
Toast at Alden's Corners
Charred bread was recovered from an archaeological site in southern Wisconsin. The site was part of mid-to late-nineteenth century rural hamlet known historically to have been resident to many German immigrant families. Given the cultural proclivity by the Germanic peoples for rye bread, the archaeological sample was hypothesized to be rye. To test this hypothesis, a polymerase chain reaction analysis of DNA extracted from the bread was conducted…

Pellagra and Paleonutrition
This article outlines research avenues that can aid us in reinterpreting and expanding our understanding of the paleonutrition and skeletal biology of maize intensive horticulturists. We suggest that new and innovative perspectives about their diet and health can emerge from hypotheses concerning skeletal manifestations of pellagra. Pellagra, a niacin/tryptophan deficiency disease, is prevalent in populations that have high-maize and low-protein …
