This article examines the intersection of the transnational turn in Italian studies with the teaching of Italian language in lower division courses. It explores how comics and translation can be effectively employed to foster intercultural understanding and expand students’ perspectives on culture and identities. By engaging with emerging multilingual and transnational authors like Zerocalcare and Takoua Ben Mohamed, students gain insight into the complexities of Italian society and the diversity of the voices that creatively produce cultures. Translation practices, in turn, enhance their linguistic proficiency and their ability to position themselves between languages and cultures. This pedagogical approach, implemented through collaborative translation projects of Zerocalcare's A.F.A.B. and Ben Mohamed's Il mio migliore amico è fascista, has proven to effectively engage students in meaningful conversations about society, identity, and the broader transnational context of Italian culture. The projects, completed by second and third semester language learners, have resulted in enhanced intercultural awareness, deeper understanding of Italian identities, and a more nuanced appreciation of the language learning experience
