Cooperation and competition have long been of interest to social psychologists. Yet as noted by Phillips and DeVault (1957, p. 291), the aspects most often studied have been the effects of cooperation and competition upon other variables rather than the antecedent conditions influencing cooperation and competition. For example, Deutsch (1949) studied the productivity of groups given either competitive or cooperative instructions. One of the main reasons for the lack of studies of the antecedent conditions affecting cooperation has been the problem of finding dependent variables which are both readily quantifiable and conceptually convincing. In recent years, however, progress towards finding indices of cooperation and competition has been made in the area of experimental games research (Gallo and McClintock, 1965; Rapoport, 1968). One of the most frequently studied types of independent variables in experimental gaming research has been a questionnaire measure of personality. Research results to date with this type of variable are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. It may be seen that positive findings
