This article examines the popular representations of the past in literature, film and television in postwar Japan, with the focus on the war. The main aim is to derive a general overview of how popular culture is affected by the politics of the present and the immediate past. In the process, light is shed on how postwar Japanese society attempted to cope with the war. Not surprisingly, popular representations of the past were highly sensitive to politics. \n(description taken from publisher's website: http://jch.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/38/1/101)
