Biography and the systematic demographic approach can be of great value in all fields of modern history, where the abundance of records opens up possibilities of investigation denied to the documentarily-starved students of earlier centuries. Something that we can conveniently call the namierisation of twentieth century history is possible and much needed, and has not yet been systematically attempted. As Mr John Brooks remarks in his not uncritical life of L. B. Namier in a new Supplement to the DNB,' Namier believed that in order to understand an institution or a society 'it must be broken up into its component parts, and these studied in isolation and then in relation to the whole
