West German student unrest since I966/67 has re-awakened interest in the political attitudes of students in the Weimar Republic. However, in many of the comparisons drawn between the 'fascists of the right' of that time and the alleged 'fascists of the left' of today, frightening distortions have crept in. The only parallel that can be drawn is that now, as then, a generation of young university students is protesting against a parliamentary administration and a political 'establishment'. The impact of the German youth movement was still strongly felt in the years 1918-33, and a closer examination of that movement may prove helpful in trying to solve some of the socio-psychological problems presented by today's events. Then as now, the majority of students (between 89,000 and I38,000 in the German Reich and between i6,ooo and 24,000 in Austria) came from a middle-class background and there was a poor representation of students from lower social strata.
