The Young Conservative and Unionist organization is the direct descendant of the Junior Imperial and Constitutional League, which was founded in I906, following the heavy Conservative electoral defeat of that year. The Junior Imperial League was founded as an organization of young men with the following objectives: 'To create a practical interest in political work and organisation among the younger members of the Conservative and Unionist Party, by forming junior associations in each parliamentary division throughout the Empire, to cooperate with existing Conservative and Unionist Associations in advancing the cause of imperial unity, upholding constitutional principles, and actively furthering the Conservative and Unionist cause.'1 The league was constituted as an autonomous body with its own headquarters. The minimum subscription was sixpence per annum, and all young men between I5 and 25 years of age who supported the policies of the Conservative and Unionist Party could join. In its first year the league formed six branches; by I914 the number had risen to over 300, and the membership was reported to be nearly Ioo,ooo.2 A check came when the I914-I8 war completely disrupted the league, and in I9I8 only six branches remained. A fresh start, and the admission of women in I919, enabled the league to recover its pre-war strength by I922
