The symbolic value with which it was invested by anti-fascist writers both at the time and in later years has made the battle of Guadalajara one of the most widely known incidents of the Spanish Civil War. The defeat of the Italians on the Castillian meseta heartened the opponents of fascism throughout the world. Guadalajara immediately became not merely the name of a reverse for Franco's Italian troops but 'Fascism's First Defeat'.1 As such it was immediately given an heroic character and an importance disproportionate to the events that took place north of Guadalajara from 8 to 22 March 1937
