The original aim of this paper was restricted to testing, empirically, the impact of the revolution on race relations and inequality in Cuba. Although the issue has been the subject of considerable scholarly debate, the real question has not been how racial inequality has changed during the last thirty years in Cuba, but how successful the revolution has been in dealing with this and other social problems. The real subject of discussion has been the revolution as a political process; race relations have been used to make a case for or against the revolution. The main characteristic of this debate is its bi-polarity. It is no coincidence that those who take the view that revolutionary Cuba has solved its 'racial problem' are either official spokespeople, close to the government or the ruling Communist Party,1 or friendly observers,2 who clearly support the revolutionary process as a whole
