This study directly investigates the strategies adopted by 80 male and female undergraduates asked either (a) to say how high liquid would come in an empty glass given an amount in a standard, or (b) to pour equal amounts of liquid into two different vessels. It was found that over a variety of such problems Ss adopted different strategies not necessarily related to the conservation model of Piaget. It was argued that physical-knowledge aspects of cognition need to be studied, and that attention must also be given to understanding the metastrategies that construct particular task strategies
