Subjects' estimates of a stranger's attraction to another person were influenced by variations in the conditions of reinforcement associated with the stranger. A female actor answering a series of personal questions posed by a man evaluated him either favorably or unfavorably, either quickly (2 s) or slowly (4 s), and on either 4 trials or 10 trials. In addition, half the subjects heard the actor shift her response latency from either 4 s to 2 s or from 2 s to 4 s. Subjects gauged the actor as more attracted to the questioner if she responded favorably rather than unfavorably and, for favorable responses, if she responded quickly on 10 trials rather than on only 4 trials and responded quickly rather than slowly on 10 trials. A positive contrast effect was found in the 4-trial condition when the actor shifted her response latency from 4 s to 2 s. The results suggest that attraction theories emphasizing the reinforcing stranger's incentive value may be more powerful in explaining not only the attitudes and behaviors of the participants in a relationship but the perception of observers as well
