This study investigates the nurturance of cognitive processes in able fifth-and sixth-grade students for a period of two years. Experimental teachers received training over the two-year period in formulating questions requiring cognitive memory (CM), convergent thinking (CT), evaluative thinking (ET), and divergent thinking (DT) responses. A total of 144 tapescripts of social studies classes for the 12 experimental teacher-class units and for the 12 control teacher-class units were made at the beginning and termination of the two-year interval. These were analyzed according to the Aschner-Gallagher Classroom Interaction Analysis System. The ratio of higher process thinking (ET + DT) to total thinking (CM + CT + ET + DT) was calculated for each unit and examined by a three-way analysis of variance design. The experimental units made a statistically significant increase in the use of higher process thinking during the period, while the control units made little change in thinking processes. In addition, able children in the experimental classes increased significantly in IQ over the two-year period when measured by a process-dominant intelligence test, while the able control children remained at their previous level
