Two natural-recreation areas in the state of Pennsylvania that differ in the amount of development that each has undergone, the Pine Creek and the Poconos areas, were the subject of comparative study of users of these areas. The research was designed to explore the hypothesis that attitudes towards development, and towards the provision of facilities and amenities, will be more favorable among users of the more highly developed area. Two studies reported relate to this hypothesis. The first consisted of an on-site survey of campers at State Parks in the two areas. The hypothesis was confirmed, both in terms of responses to questions relating specifically to preferences for development and provision of specific facilities, and in terms of scores on a revised version of Hendee's urbanism-wildernism scale. A second study confirmed and extended the previous findings through a survey of a different population, including individuals who lease sites on State Forest lands in the same two areas. Responses to a mail survey utilizing a questionnaire similar to that employed in the first study again showed more favorable attitudes towards development among those in the more highly developed area.Implications of the positive feedback process suggested by these findings for the management of natural recreation areas are discussed
