This study employs a travel cost analysis of a Louisiana recreation site characterized by relatively low cost repeat visits by recreationists. Using primary data collected from over 2,000 hunters during the 1987–1988 deer hunting season at a Louisiana Wildlife Management Area, this study analyzes the changes in the estimated visitation function and consumer surplus estimates generated in a travel cost model under alternative specifications, including alternative travel time opportunity costs and alternative demand cut-off points. Empirical results indicate that including a measure of opportunity cost of travel time can significantly influence estimates of consumer surplus, even in the case of localized, relatively low cost recreation experiences. Similarly, specification of demand cut-off points in the travel cost model can influence consumer surplus value, suggesting the need for care in reporting scenarios rather than point values
