Johan Galtung has contributed many provocative and innovating suggestions to peace research and its terminology. For that reason alone, an article of his always deserves attentive analysis. At the same time his linguistic inventions, his charts and illustrative models these being an inspiring specialty of Galtung's approach need under all circumstances, not least when they seem particularly alluring, the caveat as to their partial and simplified representation of a more involved reality.l The article we are dealing with here needs, unfortunately, an extra caveat, namely a warning against distortion. Apart from this we should precede our analysis with a rather sceptical look at the excuses with which Galtung has introduced his article and which the unprejudiced reader would do well to reject
